Coping With Depression
Coping With Depression
Article By Nicky Parks
There are many different types of depression that each has their own diagnosis as well as treatment. In all cases a medical doctor will have to make a professional diagnosis before prescribing medication or other treatment.
One of the most severe types of depression is "major"
depression. This type of depression is usually quite easy to diagnosis as more of the symptoms are present in this type of depression than any other type. Major depression is often the result of a traumatic experience or event that occurs in a person~s life.
Major depression can also be the result of a series of personal disappointments that a person experiences over a period of time that start to cause problems in their daily life. Many people experience some type of major depression once in their life and then never experience it again.
Dysthymic disorder is another type of depression.
People with dysthymic disorder experience a less severe form of depression than major depression with less severe symptoms and overall depression. Individuals suffering from dysthymic depression feel depressed every day for an extended period of time. The depression may be responsible for low energy, changes in appetite and sleep patterns, diminishing self esteem and a general feeling of sadness.
How to Cope With Depression
This particular type of depression responds well to medication and counseling. Dsythymic depression frequently reoccurs, so individuals who experience it will need to be vigilant about their symptoms.
Some other types of depression are difficult to define or categorize. Only a trained professional can determine what type of depression someone is suffering from and make the appropriate recommendation.
Reactive depression, sometimes known as an adjustment disorder, is the result of a person having a difficult time adjusting to changes in their lives.
Sometimes, individuals experience severe side effects as a result of some life stress. A physician may be reluctant to prescribe medication for this form of depression and instead recommend counseling and or therapy.
The important thing to keep in mind with any type of depression is that the person should seek the advise of a doctor who will be qualified to determine what type of depression they are suffering from and what the best course of medical treatment should be.
Many times a person will be experiencing minor symptoms of depression that they think are just a minor disturbance, letting the depression carry on for years before they reach a crisis point.
There are many different types of medication that a medical doctor can prescribe for even the most minor types of depression. People who are feeling any type of depression, no matter how minor, should understand that there is help for them out there and they are not alone. And helping yourself to cope with depression is possible.
